An Unusual, Antique, Silver Business Card Holder by the Renowned Robert Linzeler

On offer is a unique and unusual piece of silver by the renowned French silversmith Robert Linzeler, that dates probably to circa 1910. It is listed as a business card holder purely because its design suggests such a function, but extensive research, including contact with museums and Linzeler specialists has failed to come up with a definitive answer, nor anything that remotely resembles it.

It is made of solid silver with a removable brass plate to the bottom. It houses three lengths of lead crystal; the two outer lengths are pushed towards the centre by springs attached to the sides, allowing them to be pushed open by roughly 1/4. This ability to keep cards (and the fact that the length of the openings are just right for business cards) suggests it was made as a business card holder/dispenser, and was most likely a one-off. Linzeler registered his business and poinçon in 1897, which shows the crown mark and his own initials within the punch. Both the silver and brass plate are clearly stamped Robert Linzeler as well as with his punch mark.

He exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris where his beautiful vases attracted much attention and praise and he was awarded a gold medal for the cutlery he exhibited. Linzeler was also a supplier for some of the most important retailers of the day, such as Cartier for whom he made silverware for many years including candlesticks, desk sets, and dressing table accessories.
